Advancing clinical nutrition excellence across Pakistan through education, research, evidence-based practice, and multidisciplinary collaboration in parenteral and enteral nutrition support.
The Pakistan Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (PSPEN) is the premier professional medical society in Pakistan dedicated to advancing the science and practice of clinical nutrition, metabolic support, and nutritional care for hospitalized and critically ill patients.
PSPEN brings together a multidisciplinary community of physicians, surgeons, intensivists, dietitians, nurses, and pharmacists who are committed to improving nutritional outcomes for patients across Pakistan. Our society is a recognized member of PENSA (Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Society of Asia) and actively collaborates with SAPEN, ASPEN, and ESPEN.
Pakistan faces a dual burden — with over 40% of hospital patients at risk of malnutrition, and critical gaps in specialized nutrition support knowledge among healthcare providers. PSPEN was founded to bridge this gap through education, guidelines, research, and advocacy.
To promote best practices, education, and research in clinical nutrition and metabolic support across Pakistan, improving patient outcomes through evidence-based parenteral and enteral nutrition therapy.
A Pakistan where every hospitalized patient receives optimal nutritional care delivered by a competent multidisciplinary nutrition support team, reducing malnutrition-related morbidity and mortality nationwide.
Critical statistics that drive our mission to improve nutritional care standards across Pakistan
PSPEN's core objectives guide our efforts to transform nutritional care across Pakistan

Promote formation of Nutrition Support Teams (NSTs) in hospitals integrating doctors, dietitians, nurses, and pharmacists for comprehensive patient care.
Develop, adapt, and disseminate national clinical nutrition guidelines based on global best practices from ASPEN, ESPEN, and PENSA tailored for the Pakistani healthcare context.
Maintain active partnerships with PENSA, SAPEN, ASPEN, and ESPEN to bring international expertise to Pakistan and represent Pakistan's nutrition community globally.

Watch NowParenteral Nutrition (PN) is a method of delivering nutrients — including carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals — directly into the bloodstream via an intravenous catheter, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract. It is used when patients cannot be adequately fed through the gut due to conditions like severe bowel injury, obstruction, or major GI surgery.
Enteral Nutrition (EN) delivers nutrients directly into the stomach or small intestine via a tube (nasogastric, nasojejunal, gastrostomy, or jejunostomy tube). It is preferred over PN when the GI tract is functional, as it maintains gut integrity, is more cost-effective, and is associated with fewer complications.
PSPEN membership is open to all healthcare professionals with an interest in clinical nutrition and metabolic support — including physicians, surgeons, intensivists, gastroenterologists, registered dietitians, clinical nutritionists, pharmacists, nurses, and researchers working in Pakistan or of Pakistani origin.
PSPEN is the official Pakistani member society of PENSA (Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Society of Asia) — a pan-Asian body founded in 1995. PSPEN is also a founding member of SAPEN (South Asian Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition) established in 2024, representing Pakistan alongside India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and other South Asian nations.
Refeeding Syndrome is a potentially life-threatening metabolic complication that can occur when nutrition (EN or PN) is rapidly reintroduced to severely malnourished patients. It causes dangerous shifts in electrolytes — particularly phosphate, potassium, and magnesium — leading to cardiac, neurological, and respiratory complications. PSPEN promotes awareness and safe refeeding protocols among Pakistani clinicians.
