Pakistan Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (PSPEN) — Evidence-based screening instruments endorsed for clinical use across hospitals, ICUs, and outpatient settings in Pakistan.
Why Nutritional Screening Matters
Malnutrition in hospitalized patients is linked with higher morbidity, prolonged stays, and increased mortality. Early identification using validated tools enables timely nutritional intervention and improves clinical outcomes. Below are three internationally recognized tools recommended by PSPEN for routine use.
Community & Hospital
1. MUST Flowchart
Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool — A simple 5-step flowchart developed by BAPEN to identify adults who are malnourished, at risk of malnutrition, or obese. Ideal for primary care and community settings.
Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 — ESPEN-endorsed tool that assesses impaired nutritional status and disease severity. Recommended as the first-line screening tool for hospitalized patients.
Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition — A consensus framework for diagnosing and grading malnutrition using phenotypic and etiologic criteria. Endorsed globally by ASPEN, ESPEN, PENSA, and FELANPE.
Clinical Note: These tools are intended for use by qualified healthcare professionals. Screening should be followed by a comprehensive nutritional assessment and individualized care plan.
